2. Fairplay & Gameplay

Learn what type of behavior is expected when you're on our servers.

Rust is a fun game to play with your friends or by yourself, no matter what type of gameplay you prefer. But it is also a PvP (Player vs. Player) game. Some conflicts, lost fights, or banter is to be expected.

If you believe someone is breaking the rules, you should create a ticket in our Discord server at https://discord.hws-rust.com in #🔥|create-help-ticket. Tickets are private between you and staff members, although other users can be invited.

2.1 Combat & Raiding#

Fighting other players, killing them, looting them, or raiding their bases; all of these are legal and part of the game, as long as they are done without the use of bugs, exploits, or other cheats.

We discourage offline-raiding, and bases become significantly stronger 30 minutes after the owner has logged out. PvP should be against players, and not empty buildings. With that said, offline-raiding is not outright forbidden.

Taking over other players' bases is not allowed. When your raid is done, you should leave the base again. You may clear the Tool Cupboard (TC) to prevent turret fire or to protect yourself from griefing during the raid, but you are not allowed to put your own lock on it or wall it off. If you replace doors to protect yourself from during the raid, you must remove those doors or leave them unlocked/open when you leave.

In summary:

  1. You may not change codes or replace doors with the intent of keeping the original owner out (when you leave).
  2. Do not destroy the entire base (foundation wiping), unless it is necessary to reach the main loot room.
  3. When the raid is complete, the base must remain accessible to the original owner.

Potential Punishments#

  • Temporary Ban, Permanent Ban, or Loss of Game Progress.

2.2 Griefing#

You are not allowed to grief.

Definition: Griefing is any action intended to maliciously prevent a player from using their base, accessing the server, or progressing, without the goal of gaining loot.

That includes, but is not limited to:

  • Creating a wall of high external walls, foundations, landmines, or turrets, around a player's base specifically to trap them inside or prevent them from accessing their base.
  • Placing "grief TCs" near another player's base, only to prevent them from expanding or repairing. For example, by placing 1x1 buildings around someone's base.
  • Throwing or dropping loot onto the floor, just so the owner can't have it. If you don't want the loot, leave it in the boxes.

Potential Punishments#

  • Temporary Ban, Permanent Ban.

2.3 Clan-Splitting#

In order to encourage fair play and to give all players a chance, clans are limited to groups of 5 players. This rule is in place to prevent mega-clans from dominating the server and preventing anyone else from standing a chance.

Circumventing this limit in any way is forbidden.

  • You may not form alliances with other groups, and you should not be cooperating with any other players for any reason.
  • Coordinated raiding or defending along with other groups is not allowed.
  • Separate clans may not share bases. Each clan should have its own distinct area. Building "neighborly" bases to protect each other is considered splitting.
  • Non-Aggression Pacts (NAPs) are allowed, but actively trading resources or sharing codes is prohibited.

Potential Punishments#

  • Temporary Ban, Permanent Ban, or Loss of Game Progress.

2.4 Member-Swapping#

If a clan member leaves, they must stay out of the group for at least 48 hours. You are not allowed to frequently "swap" back and forth between the same selection of players in your clan.

That also means that you cannot bring another player in just for a raid or just to build.

Potential Punishments#

  • Temporary Ban, Permanent Ban, or Loss of Game Progress.

2.5 Building#

To maintain server performance and fair play, there are some rules for how you're allowed to build.

Unfinished, abandoned, or similar structures that are not connected to a maintained TC will be removed by admins without warning. It's also prohibited to place sole foundations or frames across large areas of the map to "claim" land. Every structure must be part of a functional base or compound.

Building towers or sniper nests around another's base specifically to camp their door is not allowed, if you're not raiding them.

2.5.1 Blocking#

  • You may not completely block off major monuments or completely encircle it with walls.
  • Structures that completely obstruct main roads are forbidden. Bridges are allowed, as long as they do not require a "toll" or block vehicle passage.
  • Building inside a cave is allowed, but you can't wall off the entrance from the outside to prevent others from entering the cave system.

2.5.2 Performance#

While compounds are allowed, "wall-stacking" or placing 4-5 layers of high-external walls is not. It causes significant lag for players rendering your base.

You're not allowed to spam light and sound to create "lag machines" using excessive flickering lights, sirens, or automated note-blocks.

Potential Punishments#

  • Temporary Ban, Permanent Ban, or Loss of Game Progress.

2.6 Internal Clan Disputes and Sabotage#

Disputes within a clan is up to the clan themselves to deal with. Admins cannot help with items being taken by other clan members, as it would be impossible to keep up with across clans. Keeping track of personal assets is your own responsibility.

With that in mind, we do not tolerate sabotage. Joining another clan with the intention of destroying their progress, despawning their loot, or changing codes is prohibited. If you leave a group, you may take a "fair share" of the loot you helped farm, but you may not wipe the base or steal everything.

Potential Punishments#

  • Temporary Ban, Permanent Ban, or Loss of Game Progress.
